Malmo Events and Malmo Festivals 2009 / 2010
(Malmo, Skane County, Sweden, SE)
The famous Malmo Festival (Malmöfestivalen) is amongst the very biggest of all the annual events taking place in this part of Sweden and visitor numbers regularly exceed one and a half million, making this quite a crowded affair.
Taking place each year, over ten days in the middle of August, many of the things to do and events related to the Malmo Festival are completely free of charge, and include plenty of live music, tasty food, international market traders, theatrical performances, and a dragon boat contest. On the opening night of the Malmo Festival, crowds gather for a major fireworks display, while on the Friday people head to the Stortorget, where there is always a large crayfish party.
Other notable festivals in Malmo include the Rainbow Festival (Regnbagfestivlen), which is a huge gay and lesbian event in mid-September, with a number of colourful carnival-like processions, film screenings and countless parties. Also look out for Malmo's International Children and Young People's Film Festival, a crowd-puller held in March since it began in 1984 and otherwise known as the BUFF Festival.
Although BUFF is very much a children's festival, with many animated films, it really does appeal to all ages. In total, some 100 different films are screened over a period of six days, so there is sure to be something you'll find appealing.
