Well-placed to explore much of southern Sweden, Malmo is close to a myriad of different attractions, and is even within striking distance of Copenhagen, with Denmark being linked by the famous Oresund Bridge, which spans the Oresund Strait. Within Sweden itself, some of the most visited attractions close to Malmo are to be found within Helsingborg, Lund, Trelleborg and Ystad.

Each year, almost 15 million travellers pass through Helsingborg on their way to Denmark, and sadly most only just see a glimpse of this charming city and miss out on its many appealing attractions and historic buildings. A small city in the Skane area of southern Sweden, Lund is approximately 20 km / 12 miles to the north-east of Malmo and features a population of around 100,000 residents. With a heritage stretching back over 1,000 years, many of the main attractions in Lund are extremely historic, with the glorious Romanesque cathedral (Domkyrkan) being the crowning glory of all the city's architecture and known for its beautiful clock with animated wooden figures.

Trelleborg is a medium-sized town with roughly 40,000 inhabitants and can be found some 32 km / 20 miles to the south of Malmo. Offering an important gateway between both Germany and Sweden, Trelleborg features a particularly busy ferry port and has just celebrated its 750th birthday. The Trelleborg Museum is amongst the town's main attractions and lies on the eastern side of the centre, on the Ostergatan, while the 9th-century Viking fortress of Trelleborgen is also worth exploring.

Ystad is an extremely popular excursion, being located a mere 59 km / 37 miles to the south-east of Malmo. Visitors to Ystad can expect to enjoy some of the main attractions around the Stora Ostergatan and the Stora Norregatans, such as the 17th-century Anglahuset building. Also look out for the sandy beaches, the Sankta Maria Kyrka on the Stortorget, and the Ystads Konstmuseum on the St. Knuts Torg, which is filled with Danish art and stands next the tourist office.
